What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding, also known as tooth bonding, is a cosmetic procedure that uses a soft composite resin, the same material used for white fillings, to fix cracked, chipped, decaying, or sometimes discolored teeth. The resin can be molded into any shape and buffed to any color to match the teeth. A special light is then used to harden the resin and your smile is as good as new!

Dental Bonding Eligibility: Who Can Get It

Tooth bonding is for anyone who may have teeth with minor injuries and imperfections as long as there are no underlying issues like severe tooth decay. It is best that you talk to a dentist and see if this is a viable option for you.

If you’ve lost the majority of a tooth or teeth or there is critical damage, your dentist may recommend an alternate cosmetic procedure such as a veneer, crown, or in some instances a dental implant instead of bonding.

When You Should Get Dental Bonding

You should consider getting dental bonding when you want to:

  • Fix a minor decayed tooth
  • Improve the shade of a discolored tooth
  • Repair a cracked or chipped tooth
  • Close a minor gap that appears between two teeth
  • Change the shape of your teeth
  • Make your teeth appear longer
  • Protect part of the tooth’s root that has been exposed due to a receding gumline

Where to Get Dental Bonding

Cosmetic Dentistry Grants (CDG) will help you find a cosmetic dentist in your area that participates in the CDG program, allowing you to get financial assistance toward your Dental Bonding procedure.

CDG does not provide free or fully subsidized dental procedures.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

There are many benefits that come after a dental bonding procedure. Some of which include:

  • Simple procedure: this procedure is usually done in one dentist visit
  • Painless: little to no tooth enamel is removed
  • Cost-efficient: dental bonding is one of the least expensive cosmetic procedures
  • No anesthesia unless dental bonding is used to fill a cavity

How Dental Bonding Is Done: What Is the Procedure?

To prepare for the procedure, your dentist will show you a shade guide chart to help you and the dentist decide which color resin is best suited for your tooth or teeth. Anesthesia is not commonly used unless the resin is being used to fill a decaying tooth or if it is used to cover a root exposure.

The dentist will then begin to prepare to roughen the surface of the tooth and bond the composite resin to the tooth. The resin is smoothed into the desired shape to repair the damage to the tooth. When you have the desired shape, the dentist will then solidify the resin with a UV light or laser. If there are still some imperfections to the shape, the dentist will trim and polish the resin to make it match the sheen and color of the existing tooth.

How Much Does Dental Bonding Cost?

Tooth bonding is one of the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedures, which is why it is so common. Generally, the bonding of a single tooth can cost anywhere between $100 and $400, depending on how extensive the bonding is and the experience level of the dentist performing the procedure.

Sometimes bonding is part of a larger procedure and included in the cost of that procedure.

How the Cosmetic Dentistry Grants Can Help You Get Dental Bonding

A Cosmetic Dentistry Grant (CDG) is available for those looking to receive a dental bonding procedure. The CDG could cover the partial cost of bonding with one of CDG’s participating dentists. Learn more about the CDG and if you’re eligible to get CDG funding for dental bonding. Apply now!

Risks of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a safe procedure. There are no risks involved, but there are a couple of disadvantages one may experience:

  • Staining: the resin material used to create the bond can be polished to fit the color of the teeth, but does not resist long term staining ie smoking of any kind, coffee, red wine, carrots, and other staining foods
  • Durability: The resin used in the bonding process is not as durable as your tooth enamel. The bonding materials do not last as long and are not as strong as crowns, veneers, or fillings. It will need to be replaced over time.

Dental Bonding: FAQ

We are asked many questions about the dental bonding procedures, so we’ve answered some of the most common questions below:

Is Dental Bonding Painful?

No, dental bonding is one of the most painless cosmetic procedures you can do considering the dentist usually doesn’t even have to shave down tooth enamel.

What Stains Dental Bonding?

Liquids and foods that are dark and rich in color can stain the resin from your dental bonding. For example, coffee, red wine, or even certain teas can cause a color change to your tooth. Cigarette smoke can also be harmful to the color of the resin on your dental bonding.

Can You Get Dental Bonding Removed?

Yes, dental bonding can be removed in a dentist’s office. Your tooth will be roughened with a mild acid, it usually doesn’t involve removal of any tooth enamel.

How Many Times Can a Tooth Be Bonded?

Usually, a tooth will need to be bonded every five to ten years. The tooth can be bonded up to however many times your dentist may see fit.

Does Bonding Look Natural?

Yes! The material used for the bonding (resin) is specially formulated to best match the color of your teeth, making it camouflage to the tooth and surrounding teeth.

How Long After Tooth Bonding Can I Eat?

One of the great things about tooth bonding is you don’t have to wait after your appointment to eat or drink! You may experience some sensitivity to hot or cold foods, but most foods are ok to eat right after your procedure.

From Our Recipients

Due to a serendipitous google search for something unrelated I learned about this opportunity and like a dream come true I will have something that I have wanted repaired for years, repaired. It began when I was 7 or 8, I had fallen on my face and my baby tooth was thrusted into my bone pushing my adult tooth up. Over the years of dental surgery and braces they were able to bring the tooth down but I had a lot of other issues that occured and things were never quite right and I did not have the money to repair it. But now I am and feel thankful and very happy. Thank you for your kind help. This will change my life for the better. Thank you.

Thomas Ryder - Elizabeth, NJ

I am very thankful to have been selected for the cosmetic dentistry grant and to Smile Select for helping me to achieve having a perfect smile. For about 8 years now I have grown up with braces on my teeth up until I needed my baby teeth removed, in which once tooth came down successfully and the other did not. Within time there was no progression and I was finally able to have options in getting my tooth back. Which did not feel possible at first. Luckily I overheard on the radio about the Cosmetic Dentistry Grants program and I have never felt so grateful to have been selected for this opportunity. I finally feel I am able to have a choice in getting the full smile I have dreamed of having. Thank you once again for making this possible for me.
